Erection and Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction is a man’s inability to get and keep an erection enough to maintain an active and satisfying sex life.

It can be a sign of active chronic illnesses or even psychological problems that affect the patient’s quality of life as well as his partner’s.

What is erectile dysfunction?

  • There are three separate chambers in a normal penis: two of which are erectile,
    interconnected and occupy the penis volume, called corpus cavernosum, and the urethra, a
    tube that conducts both urine and semen. The erectile chambers are connected to the pubic
    bone and go from the abdominal part to the visible part of the penis.

  • This anchor helps to keep the penis rigid when the chambers are filled with blood. Each
    erectile chamber is built by a sponge-like tissue that fills up with blood during excitement.
    The blood is kept in the penis, increasing its size and hardening it for penetration.

Erection might begin with:

  • Psychological stimuli (imagining an erotic situation) and/or physical stimuli (touching the male genitalia sensually). The nervous system acts in the brain with erotic thoughts while another center in the spine reacts to touch. Both act combined to produce an erection as an autoreflex with collaboration of the masculine hormone, testosterone.

  • From this quick description of the physiology of an erection, it is already possible to realize that any problems affecting the brain, the spine, the nerve endings in the penis, the penile arteries, the sponge body, the penis veins or testosterone production can disrupt a normal erection.

Psychological causes:

  • Anxiety;
  • Fatigue;
  • Sress;
  • Financial problems;
  • Alcohol abuse;
  • Depression;
  • Blame;
  • Marital problems;
  • Performance anxiety;
  • Sexual identity, preference and sexual orientation conflicts;
  • When it comes to physical problems, however, medical assistance is crucial.
